SIO is an Italian information technology company.
Founded in 2003, SIO initial focus was in wiretap and location trackers that evolved into their Xtreme product line.[1][2]

In 2021, SIO was found reselling Cy4Gate spyware Epeius.
The Italian prosecutor’s office of Naples later briefly suspended SIO’s wiretapping authorization.[3][4]

After acquiring ASIGINT in 2019/2020, SIO started distributing the “Spyrtacus” spyware on the Google Play Store, but was later removed for a breach of the terms of service.[5] In 2025 it was reported that the spyware was not available on the Store but it is still distributed by targeted web pages posing as WhatsApp and other popular apps.[6]

In 2022, SIO was acquired by Maticmind, which itself was then acquired by CVC Capital Partners and CDP Equity.[7]

In October 2022, an investigation by Editoriale Domani revealed that SIO paid EUR 125,000 in consulting fees to Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto.[8]

In April 2026, WhatsApp/Meta notified approximately 200 users that a fake iOS WhatsApp client containing Spyrtacus spyware, attributed to SIO’s subsidiary ASIGINT, had been installed on their devices.[9][10][11][12]

Also in April 2026, Osservatorio Nessuno published a technical analysis of Spyrtacus, version 8.71.[14]
